I started working on this mix back in March but abandoned it after many unsatisfactory attempts. Then during a recent practice session I opened the incomplete playlist and a 60 minute journey came together exactly as I’d envisioned.

After a couple of uptempo mixes at the beginning of the year I wanted to make a slower, sultry workout. It’s dark and melodic, atmospheric and thumping; late night material built around some of my favorite tracks of late-2008 / early-2009, namely Carl Craig’s masterful remix of Martin Buttrich’s “Stoned Autopilot,” a record which perfectly embodies the vibe I’ve most enjoyed playing over 15 years of djing. The overall envelope of intensity for the mix is smooth, restrained, building subtly from deep to pumping and then coming down easy to a groovy landing. I’m proud of the result; I hope you enjoy it.

This mix kicks off a new podcast titled simply, Redlight Music, which will be used as a catch-all for recordings which are neither inspirational vintage mixtapes nor live event recordings (coming, coming).

Dedicated to Addy, for whom I’m grateful and whose support and encouragement is in part responsible for this mix coming to fruition.

Mixed on two Technics 1200 MKII using Serato Scratch Live running on a Powerbook G4 and recorded through a Rane MP/XP 2016 into Peak Pro 5 running on a Mac Pro.

This is the story of how I got into dance music.

I’ve always been a fan of electronic music in general. When I was ten my favorite artists were Brian Eno, Thomas Dolby, Devo, Laurie Anderson, and Jean Michel Jarre (probably the most influential artist for me – check out Oxygene Pt. 2 – mindblowing), and I wore the cassettes out listening to them under the covers at night. As a high school senior in 1990-91 I was listening to a lot of alt rock, goth (Cure, Smiths, Joy Division, Sisters of Mercy), and electronic pop (New Order, Seal, KLF, Primal Scream, Deee-Lite).

During my freshman at college in Boston I went to industrial shows (Meat Beat Manifesto, Ministry, Front 242, KMFDM) and got turned on to some techno like Aphex Twin, The Future Sound of London, and Orbital. While home for the summer after my freshman year at college, I picked up a flier for A Rave Called Sharon, to be held in San Francisco. I had not at that point been to a rave, nor was I really sure what raves were, but I was eager to go. Alas, I couldn’t find a ride, but I held on to that flier (notice the ‘no whistles’ policy – funny).

Then in the fall of 1992 I went to an after-hours club called The Loft and my life was immediately and drastically changed. This is where I first heard real underground dance music in the context it is meant to be heard. Many of those reading this will remember this venerable institution and have similar tales to tell. But for those that don’t it was a brownstone at 21 Stanhope Street in Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood. Tall and narrow, a tight stairwell rose from the street entrance past dancefloors on the second and third floors to an amazing rooftop patio surrounded by skyscrapers. The place was open from midnight to 6am and on Fridays DJs Brian Mayhem, 333, and MGee played rave music upstairs for a mostly caucasian audience; progressive house, breakbeat, and trance. Downstairs the crowd was mostly black and latino and the sound was straight-up deep, domestic house music. The djs were Armand Van Helden, Bruno, and Craig Rainey.

The crowds didn’t mix much; the heads downstairs thought rave music was too crazy and the kids upstairs were intimidated by the attitude downstairs. Though I spent most of my time dancing upstairs, I often went to the house floor because the music was so good. I didn’t necessarily feel welcome but I felt tolerated and that was good enough. The sound system was warm and powerful (nothing sounds as good as a wall of wooden W-bins), and when the djs dropped big tracks the reactions were fantastic – the whole room jumped up and down grinning and cheering. The Loft was an exceptional way to begin my journey through dance music and in an industry that became more and more fragmented by genre I always carried both dance floors in my heart.

I attended Fridays religiously for two or three years. I learned to dj and by 1994 was traveling around for professional gigs. Overload and Jason Mouse took over as resident djs upstairs and would occasionally let my partner (DJ Caseroc) and I fill in for them. Having become so close with the music on that dance floor, those sets were a real honor. One of my favorite memories is playing Timothy Leary’s “Tune In Turn On Drop Out” over the Plastikman Acid House Remix of 777 “Alphawave” at peak hour (you can approximate my mix by opening both youtube links at the same time). Packed floor, smoke so dense you can’t see your hand in front of your face, strobes firing, cheers and screams growing louder as Richie’s acid epic reached a fever pitch…

By the time I started going to The Loft, Armand (or DJ AV8 as he was also known) was already an experienced producer with releases on seminal deep house labels Strictly Rhythm and Nervous Records, and within a year of my first visit to The Loft he moved to New York to produce more accessible dance music. This mixtape is from the days when Armand rocked the deep sh*t.

Of particular interest is the transition from “Brighter Days” to “Show Me Love;” it’s brilliant. That single mix taught me quite a lot about djing.

As always, help with the tracklist is appreciated. <del datetime="2009-12-07T22:27:01+00:00">Question for those that might know: did this mixtape have a title?</del> Thanks, Joe.

Osheen was rocking dancefloors when the rest were kicking the slats. When rave came to the north-east USA in the early 90’s, Osh was already an area veteran and quickly became known as New England’s chief house rocker. His style was jacking, chuggy, and swinging, with sophistication, muscle, and lots of surprises; a vibe that made you screw up your face and dance harder than you ever thought you could. His technical skill was second to none; his platters were always locked, and quick. Later he became a bit poppy for my taste, but he plays for his audience like a professional and his bread and butter has always been big clubs in Providence. Put him in front of a crowd that he knows appreciates the underground vibe and he throws down like a master.

A couple of memories: peak hour at a 1993 Providence party called Casper Osh drops Sasha’s remix of Hysterix “Talk To Me” (Sasha’s best, IMO) and over the rising strings in the big break down layered the Minister of House acapella. The timing was perfect, with the acapella ending just as the track reached it’s climax, and the result was probably the most brilliant use of that much-loved but over-used anthem I’ve ever heard. Massive. In the same set he also dropped DJ Icey’s banging first record, Energy Traxx Vol. 1, which had just come out.

Osheen’s signature track back in the day was Mike Dunn’s “The Pressure Cooker”, a ferocious interpretation of Cajmere’s “The Percolator”. I’ll never forget being in a crowd of thousands at a Boston party who’s title I forget (I believe it was the Primary/Liquid Todd colaboration?) when Osheen played the closing set after Derrick Carter. Though sunlight shown in from distant garage doors, the room was still very full and the vibe was electric. DC had layed down a slamming set of Chi-town business and the crowd was pumped for more. Some time into Osheen’s set, the Police appeared on stage, harassing Osh to turn off the music; chaos was in the air. Just when we thought the authorities would shut the party down, Osh dropped The Pressure Cooker (flipping the cops off at the same time, if I remember?). The reaction was explosive; as if several thousand bodies simultaneously cheered and jumped into the air.

Osheen almost always played house in those days. If you were lucky you got to hear him play one of his sick old school sets (funk, breaks, freestyle, old b-boy stuff). But what most people didn’t know was that he had great taste in trance, too, and he played it with the same jacking, swinging style that could be heard in his house sets. On a road trip to a gig he was playing he gave me this tape, Trance #7. It most likely dates to 1993. His mixtapes in those days were titled with a style and number; House #154, etc (yes, he had hundreds of mixtapes).

Though the title of the tape implies a trance romp from start to finish, let me reiterate that this is Osheen we’re talking about. The mix starts and ends with classic bombs easily categorized as trance, but the majority of the mix is more like dark tech-house, hard house, and tribal. I really appreciate how easily he transitions between genres while keeping the moods contiguous.

Years later when I started a weekly party at The Phoenix Landing I asked Osh to come up to play a classic trance set because of this tape, and it went down as one of the best in our 7.5 year run. Even self-proclaimed trance haters couldn’t resist when Osh brought the jack. It was a huge night and everyone went home sweaty and hoarse from cheering.

Looks like Osh is still rocking it, BTW. Must be about 25 years behind the decks. You can hear new mixes on his podcast, here.

Two DJs synonymous with the New England rave scene in the early- to mid-nineties were 333 and M Gee. British brothers, Paul and Mark Slater were regulars on the A-list East Coast club/rave circuit and held a residency upstairs at the original Loft on Stanhope Street in Boston. 333 played mostly trance in those days (but has since switched to house), while M Gee played mostly progressive house. Because of their foreign slang and infectious enthusiasm this duo were highly quotable. One of my favorites was Paul’s (333) response when I asked him at an afterhours in Montreal if he was going to play house: “House is for houses!” In other words, “F*ckin’ Goa – c’maown!”

Mark and Paul were not only accomplished and influential DJs but as promoters were in part responsible for some of the largest and most memorable parties in New England’s dance history. Together with Big Fun House, Pandemonium, and Tom Mello, they threw a spectacular series of events under the name Primary Productions; Blue, Yellow, Red, Green, Orange, Purple, Electric Blue, etc.

I helped out a bit at Yellow with set up and then later roaming around during the event doing whatever needed doing. I was moving around a lot, so nothing sticks out from the dj sets on the night but I do remember something about the concrete floor of the upstairs room cracking. Too much bass! The afterhours was crowded and full of classic rave drama. I believe Frankie Bones played and his girlfriend made a huge scene (took her clothes off I think). Lady Miss Kier from Deee-Lite was on the floor and we had a lot of fun dancing; smiles all around. The afterhours venue was carpeted and the crowd ignored the smoking policy (outside only) and ruined the carpet.

I DJ’d at a few of the Primary parties but my experience playing at Green was the best. Two large stages, one in a tent, were set up at the base of a grassy hill. At the top of the hill was a smaller tent showcasing New England local djs. I was scheduled to play in the locals tent at what is usually considered the peak of an event of this kind; around two or three in the morning. But as the hour drew closer some of the more aggressive locals used various tactics to bump the rest of us back and so I was rescheduled for the morning. Though I was upset about it at the time, this proved to be a good thing. I ended up playing at sunrise and while the tent was no longer packed with dancers, the hillside was crowded with people chilling and watching an epic sunrise. I had packed my records for 2am in mind but found when the time came that I had a great selection of deep and uplifting music appropriate for the hour. I remember the first two tracks of the set were Salt Tank “Sargasso Sea” [youtube] and Beat Foundation “Foundations” [youtube]. Playing the set was a moving experience for me, and for many years after the event I met people who told me how meaningful that morning and the music I played had been to them. Alas, no recording.

This mixtape was done by M Gee as a promotional teaser for the Primary event, Yellow (June 5th, 1993). It’s a wonderful, uplifting soundtrack for sunny spring and summer afternoons. The mix is crammed with deadly progressive and trance gems pitched way down for a really sultry, chuggy feel.

At some point in late 1993 or early 1994 I returned home to Santa Cruz for a visit. During this trip I went to a rave in San Francisco that Dante was playing at; I’m pretty sure it was an event thrown by Wicked. The venue was an indoor/outdoor space under a freeway overpass in central San Francisco. If I had to guess, I’d guess it was somewhere around Division/13th Street or in SOMA between Harrison and Bryant. There was at least one sound system in what I recall was a two-story night club but the main stage was outside in the parking lot. With the subterfuge required to throw parties on the East Coast I was amazed that the city allowed this kind of event in such a central location.

None of the sets from this party stand out in my memory, but I do remember bringing baby powder to the dance floor and it being a foreign concept for the crowd around me. This was a common thing on East Coast dance floors at the time; baby powder made the floor slippery and enabled more expressive dance styles (those that involved moving your feet).

While at the party I had a chance to say hello to Dante and he gave me this tape. My friends and I listened to it that morning driving back to Santa Cruz along Pacific Coast Highway 1. It was bright, clear, and sunny and we couldn’t have had a better soundtrack; it was a blissful experience I hope I never forget.

The mix has no title but later my Boston friends and I all referred to it in a certain way, though I can’t remember what we called it; “Dante Ambient”, possibly. It’s more of a chill mix, actually; downtempo tribal beats interspersed with purely ambient sections. The mix provides a wonderful journey of moods ranging from peaceful meditation to bursting ecstasy.

A real gem here from Onionz; circa 1992. Some of my favorite early techno and trance jams pitched way down and blended with that mysterious element which made young Onionz so magic. A common phrase uttered by DJs and trainspotters in the early 90’s whenever O was playing was “Where the f*#@ does he get his records?!” This is because he frequently dropped weird or overlooked records that either no one had heard before or didn’t have the balls to play. To this day, much of this tape remains a mystery to me.

Besides being a savant of early esoteric house and techno, young Onionz had a reputation for being a bit of a loose screw; stories abound. First hand: at Essence in NYC, after Dubtribe tore the roof off (their first big gig on the East Coast and the first time many of the scene had ever heard of them), O went on and proceeded to slowly play a record backwards with his finger for ten minutes or more while 3000+ people looked on with our jaws agape. Can’t remember if he was pulled and someone else went on or the party ended early. Second hand: some New England promoters were in the process of driving O to a gig when they made a pit stop. They came out of the store just in time to see a bus driving away with O waiving from the window. They had to chase down the bus and retrieve the DJ. First hand: while playing at the Warehouse in Portland, Onionz got frustrated with several mixes and each time smashed the offending record against the side of the booth. What gems were lost?!

As with the Garth @ Vision tape, what I really appreciate about this mix is how disparate styles are blended together into something really interesting. Rather that banging out one homogeneous track after another as 99.9% of DJs do, he demonstrates that he’s open to a variety of music and can tie it all together effectively with a common mood …and what a mood! Too bad about the last track on the first side (42:43); ick.

A couple interesting things about the mix: There are a lot of tracks on here; many records he plays for just a minute or two. You might recognize the Ege Bam Yasi track from Tin Tin @ Blue; there pitched at +8, here at -8. Another highlight is what is in my opinion Richard James (aka Caustic Window, Aphex Twin) best work, “Joyrex J4.”

Would love to know what the unknowns are; hope the trainspotters can fill in the gaps. Thanks!

In late 1992 or early 1993 an offer appeared on a rave mailing list I was subscribed to (probably NEraves) for a five tape collection of recordings from a party in San Francisco called Vision. I don’t know exactly where or when this event was held, but based on the music I think it was sometime in 1992. The DJs on the tapes are Spun, Tony, Josh, Jeno, and Garth.

Lots of early west coast magic here but the tape that always stood out for me was Garth’s. This eclectic mix of acid house, progressive house, trance, deep house, and disco funk made a real impression on me. I very much appreciate that many styles are represented here and that, even for the time, he’s playing a mix of both new and vintage. I assume that this was the closing set, for on the second side of the tape (beginning 48:05) he brings the party into a really nice landing with some super tasty house and disco classics.

Markus, tell us about this mix…
Getting this months mix together wasn’t the easiest task. I had so many great records to choose from, all of which were released in the last couple of weeks. I have been touring constantly since the beginning of the year and therefore wanted to record El Tintero #4 live at one of the gigs, but in the end I decided to do it in the studio. I had a glass of wine and just locked myself in for a couple of hours. I hope you will dig the result; it is a quick overview of what I like currently. It starts quite deep and even a bit mystic, but then quickly moves into the more rocking side of things. A bit of everything I would say.

Wonderland was of the Boston area’s first large raves. KC & The Sunrise Gang held “Deep” in Portland, ME, the weekend before and there was a lot of excitement that a scene was developing and we were all part of something special. Wonderland was held in the Northeastern Trade Center in Lowell, MA on January 30th, 1993. On the night of this party there was a blizzard and when we came out in the morning the roads hadn’t been plowed and driving home was a real adventure.

The first side of this tape is certainly Jeno (of San Francisco’s legendary Wicked Crew) but I’m not sure who’s on the second side (beginning 44:50). It seems to me that the sides are not contiguous; that is, the second side could be a recording from another time in the night. The second dj does a bit of scratching and my first thought was this might be Overload, but upon hearing it Shawn confirmed this was not him. So, that leaves another mystery open to the trainspotters.

Though several promoters had been throwing smaller events in New England for about a year by this time, it was in the first months of 1993 that things really took off for the New England scene. Events got larger and more frequent. KC’s “Deep” (1993-01-23) and Never Neverland’s “Wonderland” (1993-01-30) were both outstanding but the scale of Blue (1993-02-13) was on another level.
A lot of this had to do with the size of the venue; The Shriner’s Auditorium had very high ceilings and an open floor so large that rather than having a house stage in a separate room, they put it in a tent toward the back of the hall, open facing away from the main stage. The main stage was built way up high and had a Mayan pyramid facade. Add to this an overhead laser and incredible sound system and you had a truly awesome environment.

This was the first New England party I can remember having a strong New York influence. Seems it was the first to sell tickets in NY and New Jersey, work with promoters there to publicize the event and organize buses, and to hire a large contingent of NY djs. Primary knew that to throw an event of this magnitude they’d have to “unite the tribes.” Up to this point, New England parties (especially those in Maine) had a very different vibe than was found in NYC, Baltimore, DC, and Philly. Up north it was more innocent and carefree; in NYC and south it was a lot more serious. When the crowds came together I think it made for a great mix, though with the NYC crowd came a darker, shadier element. As time went on this shady, “hoody” element became synonymous with Connecticut events and could be found often in Massachusetts but for the most part the beloved Maine vibe was spared.

The best part about the event of course was the music. Here we have a recording of back-to-back sets by a couple of really talented UK DJs, Tin Tin and Bob Bentley. It has to be said that Tin Tin was a total douche and his support in New England ended six months later at Independance when he decided he deserved more money and punched out Kris Clark, a sweet guy who was responsible for not only the first raves in New England, but a long string of extremely memorable ones that gave Portland, ME, the reputation for having the best vibe in New England. That said, Tin Tin does an amazing job here, throwing acapellas here and there on top of the biggest trance and progressive house jams of the time. The highlight for me is his transition into progressive house using the acapella of Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” (starting at 44:40). The magic happens at 47:24 when he takes the dance track out completely and lets the acapella ride on it’s own for a couple of bars before dropping the Steve Anderson remix of Paul McCartney’s “Deliverance”. The key changes from major to minor and the mood created by the two records together is something profound.

Two interesting things to note about this recording: first, these DJs have their records pitched up much faster than you could play them on conventional Technics. They were able to maintain such an energetic tempo because the decks they were using had been modified to support +/- 16% pitch control; a modification necessary for the hardcore djs who played earlier in the night.

Second, a puzzle for the trainspotters. This recording was digitized from a cassette tape. I’ve glued the recordings of the two sides of the tape into one mp3 file. The first side of the tape begins with one of my all-time favorite records, “Mantra” by CJ Bolland. There is a possible change of DJs at 07:14 when “Age of Love” is faded out and new track starts from the beginning. The first side ends fading out at 39:09 on another all-time fav, Gat Decor’s “Passion” (Naked Mix). The second side begins with “Passion” being cut suddenly and the acapella of “Fever Called Love” possibly starting a new dj set (pretty sure it’s Tin Tin starting the progressive portion of his set). At 1:05:30 Tin Tin ends his set and Bob Bentley begins (hard to miss thanks to Frankie Bones, who could never get off the mic soon enough for me). Here’s where it gets tricky: the second side ends with “Mantra”. It was common in those days for songs to be played several times in a night (it’s sad that this practice has since become frowned upon but then there aren’t as many memorable anthems being played, either). In essence, the first side begins with the same song as the second side ends, and the first side ends with the same song as the second side begins. So the question is, who is playing on the first side? Does the first side actually come chronologically after the second? It wouldn’t be the first tape I have like this.) My guess is that, based on the use of acapellas, the tape is in correct chronological order, and the first side is Tin Tin. If that is the case, who played before Tin Tin (ending with “Age of Love”)? Amusing coincidence…

Hope you enjoy this as much as I continue to.

I’ve been digesting a lot of music lately and had a tough time deciding which direction to go. Very happy with the result; I think it’s worth the wait (I know you’ve all been waiting).

This mix begins with a lovely deep hypnotic tune by Pezzner then quickly builds through a couple of big tribal tracks into some pumping tech house. After reaching a peak it drops down through a few retro-sounding deep techno tracks that remind me of the early 90’s (the pads in “Tuesday Paranoia” and “Rond” are gorgeous) and eases into a landing with a couple of funky house jams; closing with a really sweet MyMy remix that sounds like a deeper version of “Knights of the Jaguar.”

Here’s wishing you all a fist pumping, booty swinging Valen-slime’s day. Lots of love to my lady Addy.

The second episode of El Tintero comes from our collaborator in this project, Markus Mehta, head of Munich-based Electronic Soul. His mix was recorded live during a gig at the Ampere Club in Munich in late October 2008.

Back Story
While on vacation in Spain in September 2008 Shannon Shalako lost a hand of cards for which he bet he would do a dj mix every month for a year. His friend Markus Mehta, of Electronic Soul, bet the same on the next hand and also lost. So they decided to do this podcast together. El Tintero, a famous seafood restaurant on the beach in Malaga, was the site of the event.
