After a couple of uptempo mixes at the beginning of the year I wanted to make a slower, sultry workout. It’s dark and melodic, atmospheric and thumping; late night material built around some of my favorite tracks of late-2008 / early-2009, namely Carl Craig’s masterful remix of Martin Buttrich’s “Stoned Autopilot,” a record which perfectly embodies the vibe I’ve most enjoyed playing over 15 years of djing. The overall envelope of intensity for the mix is smooth, restrained, building subtly from deep to pumping and then coming down easy to a groovy landing. I’m proud of the result; I hope you enjoy it.

This mix kicks off a new podcast titled simply, Redlight Music, which will be used as a catch-all for recordings which are neither inspirational vintage mixtapes nor live event recordings (coming, coming).

Dedicated to Addy, for whom I’m grateful and whose support and encouragement is in part responsible for this mix coming to fruition.

Mixed on two Technics 1200 MKII using Serato Scratch Live running on a Powerbook G4 and recorded through a Rane MP/XP 2016 into Peak Pro 5 running on a Mac Pro.

Markus, tell us about this mix…
Getting this months mix together wasn’t the easiest task. I had so many great records to choose from, all of which were released in the last couple of weeks. I have been touring constantly since the beginning of the year and therefore wanted to record El Tintero #4 live at one of the gigs, but in the end I decided to do it in the studio. I had a glass of wine and just locked myself in for a couple of hours. I hope you will dig the result; it is a quick overview of what I like currently. It starts quite deep and even a bit mystic, but then quickly moves into the more rocking side of things. A bit of everything I would say.

This mix begins with a lovely deep hypnotic tune by Pezzner then quickly builds through a couple of big tribal tracks into some pumping tech house. After reaching a peak it drops down through a few retro-sounding deep techno tracks that remind me of the early 90’s (the pads in “Tuesday Paranoia” and “Rond” are gorgeous) and eases into a landing with a couple of funky house jams; closing with a really sweet MyMy remix that sounds like a deeper version of “Knights of the Jaguar.”

Back Story
While on vacation in Spain in September 2008 Shannon Shalako lost a hand of cards for which he bet he would do a dj mix every month for a year. His friend Markus Mehta, of Electronic Soul, bet the same on the next hand and also lost. So they decided to do this podcast together. El Tintero, a famous seafood restaurant on the beach in Malaga, was the site of the event. If you are ever traveling near Malaga, El Tintero is a do-not-miss experience. Here’s a great video of the place.
