In late 1992 or early 1993 an offer appeared on a rave mailing list I was subscribed to (probably NEraves) for a five tape collection of recordings from a party in San Francisco called Vision. I don’t know exactly where or when this event was held, but based on the music I think it was sometime in 1992. The DJs on the tapes are Spun, Tony, Josh, Jeno, and Garth.
Lots of early west coast magic here but the tape that always stood out for me was Garth’s. This eclectic mix of acid house, progressive house, trance, deep house, and disco funk made a real impression on me. I very much appreciate that many styles are represented here and that, even for the time, he’s playing a mix of both new and vintage. I assume that this was the closing set, for on the second side of the tape (beginning 48:05) he brings the party into a really nice landing with some super tasty house and disco classics.

the one before Stone – Time is Colonel Abrams – Music is The Answer
One of the great regrets of my life is that I decided to stay in and miss this party, because I thought the massive rave scene in SF was kinda getting stale at that point. Thanks for sharing this classic recording.
I’ve still got this same stack of 5 tapes…thanks for prompting me to dig them back out, as well as making it unnecessary for me to go to the trouble of trying to create a decent digital copy of my favorite. 🙂
BTW – The only other tapes I still have worth mentioning are:
“Massive Dose” that I think Taylor Dupree made – side 2 has some Toxic Beatbox tracks
a very old Dieselboy mix that he always hated (I think he said it was his first tape – nothing written on it)
a DJ Applepie mix that just says “Hartcore/Trance” on one side and “Deep/Tribal” on the other
Wow! Thank you so much for uploading this mix (as well as the Jeno). But for the love of all that is vinyl!! Please, please, please upload the DJ Spun too!!
Thank you again!
At 1:20:37 – the airplane sound is Wood Allen – Airport ’89 – Sound and Freq. Scratching

@David So glad to hear from someone who was at the party! Thank you for your comments. I've still got all five tapes; I'll rip Jeno shortly and make sure you get a copy, either by posting here or directly.
btw, that mix of Best Things In Life Are Free is on Garth's set; skip to 24:28.
I just ran across this site and thread looking for a copy of Jeno Live @ Vision. I used to have a mixed tape of it years ago, and played it to death. I would love to have a copy again. I saw this posting, and wondered if you would share your copy of Jeno's set. Did you post it somewhere? Is there a track listing?
This is from the Vision Rave, September 1992 in Livermore, California just off of the 580 on the Vasco Road exit in an empty warehouse. The Garth set is indeed the closing set. Near the end, Martin, the promoter, had the warehouse doors rolled up to let the sun in.
It was hands down the best rave ever in the Bay Area. The night was legendary. It really brought the scene together. (A few full moons were awesome too).
Word on the street was that the cops showed up at the warehouse at 3 am, but the promoters gave them the run around for about 3 hours by stalling, showing them fake permits, and basically twisting the whole story. They kept the party going with that.
Anyways, I have four of the five tapes from the guy who recorded them on DAT that night. I am missing Tape 4 (lost it in someone’s car). Tape 4 is Jeno and his set is just as good. He had a mix of the “Best Things In Life Are Free” with Janet Jackson and Luther Vandross.
If you have Tape 4 please reach out to me. I would love a copy. I’m at djdto at yahoo dot com.
Cheers,
David
I was there too..I don’t remember the music…But I bought all the mixtapes. I am missing one of the tapes. I’ll let you know which one I am missing and I can send you a pic or list. I remember all the freakin people and the atmosphere..and the TWEEKIN, so hard!
@Shalako – Thanks for your comments. I guess that mix of Best Things In Life Are Free is on Garth’s set but it's the dub version, although I don't think that is the name of track. As for the Jeno version I mentioned, he played the vocal version. It was a perfect mix.
I think this the set you are looking for:

Dood,
Sonny thinks the unknown track at 1:09:20 is Hanson & Davis, “Tonight (Love Will Make It Right)” (Fresh Records, 1985). Here’s the Discogs entry:

I found the Hanson & Davis release and alas, that’s not it.

OMG! I was at this party! I remember the big dusty warehouse…Everyone had black dust around their nose and mouth It was hands down, the BEST rave I’ve been too. I was only 20 at the time. We (4) sneeking in through the side door/gate and saving $20 but spending it on drugs, orange juice and mix tapes. I bought my first mix tape at this rave! I still have it. Courting Madness by Simon! I get chills just thinking about that night. BTW. I still have the Mixtapes I bought from this rave…but sad to say I lost one of them. Jeno’s set was lost by someone I lend it to. I am gonna post a pic of some of the mixtapes I have since the early 90s.
I was at this Vision, does anyone remember that at some point the police cars turned on their sirens outside and hella people were dancing to the sirens ! It was epic.
