A real gem here from Onionz; circa 1992. Some of my favorite early techno and trance jams pitched way down and blended with that mysterious element which made young Onionz so magic. A common phrase uttered by DJs and trainspotters in the early 90’s whenever O was playing was “Where the f*#@ does he get his records?!” This is because he frequently dropped weird or overlooked records that either no one had heard before or didn’t have the balls to play. To this day, much of this tape remains a mystery to me.
Besides being a savant of early esoteric house and techno, young Onionz had a reputation for being a bit of a loose screw; stories abound. First hand: at Essence in NYC, after Dubtribe tore the roof off (their first big gig on the East Coast and the first time many of the scene had ever heard of them), O went on and proceeded to slowly play a record backwards with his finger for ten minutes or more while 3000+ people looked on with our jaws agape. Can’t remember if he was pulled and someone else went on or the party ended early. Second hand: some New England promoters were in the process of driving O to a gig when they made a pit stop. They came out of the store just in time to see a bus driving away with O waiving from the window. They had to chase down the bus and retrieve the DJ. First hand: while playing at the Warehouse in Portland, Onionz got frustrated with several mixes and each time smashed the offending record against the side of the booth. What gems were lost?!
As with the Garth @ Vision tape, what I really appreciate about this mix is how disparate styles are blended together into something really interesting. Rather that banging out one homogeneous track after another as 99.9% of DJs do, he demonstrates that he’s open to a variety of music and can tie it all together effectively with a common mood …and what a mood! Too bad about the last track on the first side (42:43); ick.
A couple interesting things about the mix: There are a lot of tracks on here; many records he plays for just a minute or two. You might recognize the Ege Bam Yasi track from Tin Tin @ Blue; there pitched at +8, here at -8. Another highlight is what is in my opinion Richard James (aka Caustic Window, Aphex Twin) best work, “Joyrex J4.”
Would love to know what the unknowns are; hope the trainspotters can fill in the gaps. Thanks!

This is one of my most favorite old mixtapes and I am so very happy to have a digital copy of it now… Thanks so much
This is so much better than therapy…thank you! I never had this one, but I’m sure I heard it…it’s a new classic for me. 🙂
Here’s a request: I have an old tape called “Kelly D – Out of Body Experience v1.5” that Neith gave me long, long ago. It’s a lot of EyeQ stuff, and has been one of my favorites over the years, but at one point a friend partially recorded over it. Can you dig that one out of someone’s archives and get it up for me? I believe I was told that the DJ was Dave Kelly from Florida. Much obliged 😉
@Jesse At this point I’m just digitizing stuff from my own collection, but at some point I may accept submissions. I’m not familiar with the tape you’re referring to.

I have the record…
It’s TZ9
Brainstorm – TZ 9 – Untitled B1 – TZ (R&S Records) – 1992 (It’s the B side)

I didn’t think you could top the Tin Tin MIX but I am 30 minutes into this and it may very well beat out the Tin tin as my Fav Old school red-light mix.
Great stuff and thanks once again…!
Shannon…FUnky GrEEn DoGs FroM OuteR SpaCe!
I used to spin that at Cleveland Circle…this set is absolutely amazing and created right at the time when I came into it all…ONIONZ was/is a genius. So are you for putting all this together.
Bangin’, simply bangin’. Thanks, Shalako. You da man.
I haven’t heard this tape is eons! Have to say that I listened to this particular recording a number of times over the years and was always impressed on the selection. An art form gained only by a few and certainly lost over the years.
One of my favorite cassettes. Can’t wait to download and take with me now. I remember the Essence gig and the backward record, but I also remember Onionz starting a lot of his sets in pretty amazing/attention getting ways. We always knew when his set was starting. Thanks for posting all this – excellent music, even better memories.
07:43 = Spatial Understanding – Red Light, Green Light (Stopp!! Mix)
18:00 = The Hayden Andre Project – Tribal Life (Bang D Drum Mix)
1:09:04 > got that one too. Gimme a day to nail it down in my collection…First I thought that it is "The Bridge – Something Special" on Nervous but it only uses the same sample…
Love your old skool sets on here!
Laterz,
Pat.
YOU HAVE NO IDEA!!!!!!!!!!!
I have had ths tape since 1993. I lost everycopy I every had ever and in no way is this an exageration but you just made my year.
thanks you ….fucking THANK you!!!
this is and was teh best mixed tape I ever have heard or owned
🙂 thank u Shalako for putting this dj mix up and for mentioning some nice things about me i really appreciate it. As far as the stories about my behavior. i am going to explain it simply because i am one of those who has survived.
I was given the opportunity to pass from this world to the next and return, a few times (bigger smile. Why? i dont ask, so please try not to either.
U can hear me asking for the intruders to reach for me in this mix AND THEY DID. they reached, loved what they saw, heard and sent me back to you.
After an experience like that, question yourself. How could you not be a loose cannon….
8 years of hospitals, prescribed drugs and then being 100% natural for a decade after, i can share this kind of past stories and many more like it.
im glad i am alive today, my spirits free and i’m still allowed to make music and perform for people.
the best thing about the past is that it is over with.
a warm feeling is that this moment is amazing
and im hoping for an even brighter future.
i hope you can continue to follow your heart and my music,
Thanks to everyone who was there in that era and people who download it now.
i LOVE U

O, don’t know how you found me but thanks for the comments and thank you for all the great music.
Wow! What a trip down memory lane from my favourite dj of the era. So appreciative of all the old classic mix tapes that various folks post at various sites – thank you so much for this one. Such a powerful time – it's amazing how hearing a tape like this can bring so many intense emotions bubbling up. Intense and amazing. Such unbelievably great music. I had some live Onionz sets from back in the day because my friends were promoters in Montreal, but I had never heard this tape. Just killer. Thanks again.
1:23:12 unknown (“…the name of this story is Rumple Stilskin”) = Zero B – Spinning Wheel http://www.discogs.com/Zero-B-Module-EP/release/1…
OMG! Thank you, Shawn! I’ve been wanting to know what that record was for almost 20 years. *And* I found out what Lock Up is. So good.
Now that we got this tape hooked up wheres the Onionz Bizarre Life cassette, for me the best ever made…….my copy was lost eons ago….anybody out there have it would make my day. I have spoken to Onionz and he too does not have a copy….man I can even remember what it looked like, oh well ya never know….
thanks and keep up the work

This is truly my favorite mixed tape of all time. Our groupmof friends in boston used to listen tonit on repeat partying in our house around 1993. It was and it THE classic new england mixed tape. Without question anyone from this era knows about it. Onionz at this period was absolutely religious when he played. Everyone was dead silent and grooving.
Track at 11:55 is B-Zarre ”intruder”
DUUUUUUDDDDEEEE. I've been looking for this track for 15 years. THANK YOU!
