Though several promoters had been throwing smaller events in New England for about a year by this time, it was in the first months of 1993 that things really took off for the New England scene. Events got larger and more frequent. KC’s “Deep” (1993-01-23) and Never Neverland’s “Wonderland” (1993-01-30) were both outstanding but the scale of Blue (1993-02-13) was on another level.
A lot of this had to do with the size of the venue; The Shriner’s Auditorium had very high ceilings and an open floor so large that rather than having a house stage in a separate room, they put it in a tent toward the back of the hall, open facing away from the main stage. The main stage was built way up high and had a Mayan pyramid facade. Add to this an overhead laser and incredible sound system and you had a truly awesome environment.
This was the first New England party I can remember having a strong New York influence. Seems it was the first to sell tickets in NY and New Jersey, work with promoters there to publicize the event and organize buses, and to hire a large contingent of NY djs. Primary knew that to throw an event of this magnitude they’d have to “unite the tribes.” Up to this point, New England parties (especially those in Maine) had a very different vibe than was found in NYC, Baltimore, DC, and Philly. Up north it was more innocent and carefree; in NYC and south it was a lot more serious. When the crowds came together I think it made for a great mix, though with the NYC crowd came a darker, shadier element. As time went on this shady, “hoody” element became synonymous with Connecticut events and could be found often in Massachusetts but for the most part the beloved Maine vibe was spared.
The best part about the event of course was the music. Here we have a recording of back-to-back sets by a couple of really talented UK DJs, Tin Tin and Bob Bentley. Tin Tin does an amazing job here, throwing acapellas here and there on top of the biggest trance and progressive house jams of the time. The highlight for me is his transition into progressive house using the acapella of Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” (starting at 44:40). The magic happens at 47:24 when he takes the dance track out completely and lets the acapella ride on it’s own for a couple of bars before dropping the Steve Anderson remix of Paul McCartney’s “Deliverance”. The key changes from major to minor and the mood created by the two records together is something profound.
An interesting note about this recording: these DJs have their records pitched up much faster than you could play them on conventional Technics turntables. They were able to maintain such an energetic tempo because the decks they were using had been modified to support +/- 16% pitch control; a modification necessary for the hardcore djs who played earlier in the night.
Hope you enjoy this as much as I continue to.

WOW!!!!!!…Nothing beats the “old” stuff…
Thank you SOOOOO much for the great tracks…
@HAZMAT Thanks for the lineup. I've had this tape since just after the party so I don't think it was edited. It's just that I've got tapes from other parties where one side is from one time in the night and the other side is from another time in the night. So maybe the three tracks at the beginning are the end of Colin Dale's set and Tin Tin fades out Age of Love on him.
Hey Shannon, it's been a long time now hasn't it? My old buddy Jim from Nashua, NH actually recorded all of the sets that night on DAT, and then made mass recordings on cassette to distribute (he didn't charge anybody for them, all on his own dime). Chris (HAZMAT) was right about the "flow" bit, Jim edited the tapes that way. The sets that night were Mayhem->Overload->On-E->Adam X->Lenny Dee->Tin Tin->Bob Bentley, Colin Dale never showed. Adam was supposed to go on before On-E but was late, Ani wanted to keep to his set time which meant Shawn played for nearly two hours. I remember going up on stage and Shawn had a worried look on his face. He informed that he "…only had five records left."
Age of Love was the last track of the night, because after that we were shut down. Mark and Dave could speak to that chaos better than I.
Hard to believe it’s been 16yrs, how many rave empires have risen and fallen since then?
Who’d you get this tape from? It’s entirely possible that someone along the way edited the tape to make it flow. Otherwise, as far as I can recall, the lineup went Overload->AdamX->Lenny Dee->Colin Dale->TinTin->Bob Bently->OnE
Never thaught Id hear this again…
Thanks for the memory…
Thanks my man. I’m very much looking forward to this series
Shalako,
Thanks for posting this. I remember us listening to this in your room or on a road trip. Question: Do you or maybe any of those in the know, know the reason for not having this a Valentine Party and calling it Blue instead of RED being a day before the big Love day?????
Peace
Whoa… umm is Tin Tin still spinning?
What was it about that laser? I swear I never saw another one like it at any other event… looked like you could jump up and hang on the thing like a 8 inch steel pipe.
shannon,
thank you, this is great stuff.
i totally cannot wait for more party mixes. but i do have one request. i have been looking for this tape for years. its pete moss superfunkdaflourious. if you know where i can get my hands on an mp3 please let me know.
much love pete
@Walls – I don’t know why they decided to do Blue the day before Valentine’s day, instead of calling it Red.
@Whoa – No idea if Tin Tin is still spinning. I don’t recall seeing him on a flier after Independance.
@petey conz – I don’t have that tape, sorry.
Great memories here. What track is this that starts around 15:00? It was a huge favorite of mine and one of the few tracks I actually haven't heard in the last fifteen years.
@Scooter – The track you’re referring to is “Song of Life” by Leftfield. Really sweet mix from that into LaTour “Blue” (Hermes Trance Mix). Breakdowns drop together – tight.
Shannon,
I really like your deconstruction of the night. The recollection of the facts from the scene, intrepting the sets is just a nice touch to just hearing the music again from a party that was a pretty damned important experiential event.
I remember Dave telling me that he told the Shriners he was booking the venue for a music video. I remember how destroyed the floor was after the event….maybe that part is a metaphor for the shadier side of nyc coming to new england.
I do remember thinking how clever the scene was at the time. Everything was art: the music, the kids tweaking clothes, the laser, the HUGE bass bins.
Mahalos for your gift.
One of my ALL TIME fav old skool mix tapes. They don’t get much better than this.
Hey Shannon, thanks for hosting these “great memories”! I always wished that the tunes could be heard again, just to make sure that it really happened!
Peace
haha –
amazing how people’s memories serve them. Of course i have a totally different recollection of the events that night.
For the record – we were filming a tintin music video, you may remember some cameras on train tracks.
that fade out was bob going to tin tin.
@mark – hey man, great to hear from you and have your input. thank you for the corrections; anything else you can add would be most appreciated.
so the fade out at 7:14 is the end of bob bentle and beginning of tin tin’s set? this is confusing because at 1:05:30 we hear frankie announce the end of tin tin’s set and the beginning of bob bentley. it’s like a mobius! 🙂
1:00:38 unknown – Spooky – Land of Oz
…so what about the hardcore guys–lenny dee, adam x et al 😉
seriously though, good memories. thanks for putting all this together.
@jughead hey! i’ve also got lenny d and adam x’s sets from blue but their not really among my favorites.
I've played my copy of the Lenny D/Adam X tape so many times that it's mostly hiss, now. What sort of bribe would you like in order for me to get a proper digitized copy of yours? 😉
@Walls – the reason it was called “Blue” (and I hope I get this right, Mark or someone else can correct me) is that it was the first in a series of themed events, not tied to a date, but rather to a concept. From the name of the production company (Primary) to that company’s logo (square, triangle, circle) to the naming of the events – blue being a primary color. (Please don’t ask me why “Yellow” came next, though I do know there was an aversion to calling a party “Green” at the time – “in it for the scene, not for the green.”)
Maybe a member of the “Blue Crew” can fill this out even more.
btw, the Blue “Soundstage Pass” ticket (posted above) could possibly be the first printed rave use of “Right Of Admittance Reserved” (or R.O.A.R)!
Wow! Thanks for the memories. It’s amazing how you can listen to it now and remember all the tracks and their sequences. It was a great time and the music still has its affect today. Thank you for putting this out there.
Sarah
shannon, a few years ago i digitized an amzing Tin Tin mix tape. It’s unbelievable and i still listen to it regularly to this very day. Its from around this time because it has Rising High’s “fever called love”, Whoosh “sometimes”, that Mukkaa track perfectly mixed into Leftfield’s “song of life”, the unknown track thats after “age of love” on this tape, plus Brothers In Rhythm remixes of Inner city & Dina Carroll….and he uses the Pamela Fernandez Accapella to transition too. However my tape has no fade outs or screw ups and was probably recorded at his flat LOL.
The tape was given to me by Alby M, aka DJ Alb-E (RIP) way way back then.
If youre interested in posting or acquiring the mp3…holla
can I get the mp3, it was done at the blue promoters house, whilst preparing for the party and one of my fave mixes ever.. sadly i dont have one!
be most grateful..
lol

1:00:38 – 1:05:55 is not Spooky land of oz. Its Dina Carrol “Aint No Man” (Brothers In Rhythm remix). Tin Tin finished side A of the mixtape i previously mentioned with it as well.
and i agree with what Aidrian said about the blue laser that was at the ceiling running the entire length of the venue… i swear to god that was solid matter and not energy. I too think that I never saw anything like it again.
1:15:36 had been a bigtime club and chart hit in Europe. Not U.S.U.R.A. but something in that range and possibly Italian. Gimme some time to nail it down….
Age of love was Colin's last track.
I had be in Boston with the Slater brothers for a few weeks before Blue and started working on a set for the event. I recorded a mix in their flat which I think got pressed to tape.
If I can get a copy of the Blue mixI can certainly give a complete list. If I could get a copy of the pre recorded mix that would be awsome too.
I have to also appologise for my behavoir towards Kris, for which i have appologised to him since. I basically lost it after being knocked back over the whole evening when trying to get paid. I funded my own trip (flight etc) and when it seemed like I wasnt getting sorted out, I totally over reacted. Sad for everyone and something I'm not proud of.
TinTin
I downloaded this to listen to at work… I think I played it back to back 4 times in row. Oh. My. God. That vocal that starts Bob Bentley's set!! Unreal. This makes me seriously regret missing out on that night. Thanks for the history lesson.
This is a all time missing purfect vibe of music , dance and harmony. Big luv and thank you so much for the incredible back in tha time real music. Have a sunny day!!!, All.

It does sound like the team mix.
1:12:37 Restless Rockers – Restless [early Judge Jules production] http://www.discogs.com/Restless-Rockers-Dem-Dem-R…

27:38 General Base – In Trance (either 3am Tec Mix or Fluffy mix – haven't heard the piano mix tho) http://www.discogs.com/General-Base-In-Trance/rel…
The a capella over Gat Decor is C&C Music Factory – Music Is My Life
Where can I get more downloads like this? I was at Blue! And Red, and Yellow, and Baby Blue…
Man RED…… Slammin'
That whole party was sick from beg to end.
